One of the first diamond cuts to be used in jewellery is the emerald cut. Dating back over 500 years ago, the cut became popular during the early 20th century art deco movement. It is often referred to as the step cut, as the diamond resembled a row of steps when viewed from above.

Although not as fiery as the brilliant cut, its long facets give off strong flashes of light. The stone is typically rectangular shaped with cut corners and is comprised of 57 facets.

To achieve the perfect rectangular shape for your diamond engagement ring, we recommend a length to width ratio between 1.30 and 1.46.

When buying Emerald cut diamonds, bear in mind that this shape exposes internal flaws and inclusions. It is recommended that you opt for quality diamonds with high clarity grade when selecting stones for engagement rings, pendants and any other diamond jewellery.
